Wimbledon fan gobsmacked when they see price of strawberries and cream

Wimbledon, the prestigious and oldest tennis championship in the world, is currently underway, captivating audiences with its traditional grass courts and strict all-white dress code for players.

The All England Club in Wimbledon, southwest London, plays host to this grand event annually. The tournament isn’t just about witnessing tennis sensations like Emma Raducanu and Novak Djokovic showcase their skills as it’s also famous for its delectable food and drinks, particularly strawberries and cream.

This quintessential summer treat has been synonymous with Wimbledon since its inception in 1877, and each year, countless fans are seen savouring the sweet dish. For some, the allure of strawberries and cream is enough to draw them to the stands of Wimbledon, as seen by TikTok user Sofia Petrillo.

In her video, she admits: “I don’t know anything about tennis. I’m just here for the strawberries and cream if I’m being honest.”

Eager to sample the renowned Wimbledon dish, Sofia said: “Apparently these are insane so let’s try Wimbledon’s strawberries and cream.” However, she found herself amidst a long line of eager customers, prompting her to comment: “I hope these are worth it.”

Fortunately for Sofia, the queue was “moving pretty quickly” allowing her to indulge in her strawberries and cream without having to wait very long. Sofia was flabbergasted at the reasonable cost of just £2.70 for a portion of strawberries and cream at a major sporting event, eagerly sharing her initial reaction: “I’m not gonna lie, it’s not giving like any sort of aesthetic at all.”

Despite being underwhelmed by its presentation, Sofia didn’t hesitate to dig into the classic treat to judge if it lived up to its reputation. With a taste of the strawberry drenched in cream, Sofia’s face lit up as she remarked: “Mmm, wait, that’s actually really refreshing. I feel like I would prefer it if it was just strawberries though.”

She cheered the quality, commenting giddily: “They’re really good and they were only like £2.70.” As she relished more of the iconic Wimbledon treat, she thought “they could definitely charge more, a hundred per cent.

But while Sofia marvelled at the bargain, the price had actually seen a modest 20p increase since 2024, marking the first rise in 15 years. The official Wimbledon site boasts an astonishing fact: “On average there are 200,000 portions of strawberries and cream enjoyed during The Championships!”

Wimbledon has relied on Hugh Lowe Farms for its strawberries for numerous years. This family-owned farm covers roughly 500 hectares near Mereworth, only 31 miles from the venue. During the two week long tournament, the farm supplies freshly harvested strawberries to the grounds every morning.
