Why cardinal Robert Prevost has to change his name to Pope Leo XIV | World | News

Robert Prevost has been elected as the first American Pope in history following a two-day conclave. The 69-year-old, born in Chicago, has chosen to take the name of Leo XIV.

His choice of name hints at the direction he will take the Roman Catholic Church and could play a hugely symbolic role in setting the tone for his pontificate. Each name has its own history and is linked to the achievements of the previous popes who used it.

The changing of name has become a tradition since the 10th century with only a handful of popes choosing to keep their actual names, including Marcellus II and Adrian VI in the 16th century. Many choose to adopt more Italian-sounding names.

The last pope to choose the name Leo was over 100 years ago. Pope Leo XIII led the Roman Catholic Church from 1878 to 1903.

Catholic priest and blogger Ed Tomlinson told The Independent that the name Leo has a long history. He said: “The papal name Leo unsurprisingly shows a Pope who is going to be strong during a time of crisis, historically.”

It is also know for dedication to social justice, fair wages and safe working conditions. After being presented to crowds at the Vatican, Pope Leo XIV said from the balcony of St Peter’s Basilica: “Peace be with all you.”

The Chicago-born pope oversaw the largest Archdiocese in North America. He spent most of his career in Peru, holding Peruvian citizenship, and leads the Vatican’s office of bishops.

He also served as the Pontifical Commission for Latin America. This is where almost 40% of the world’s Catholics reside.

Provost was considered a “dark horse” ahead of the conclave. He is relatively inexperienced cimpared to other candidates having been made a cardinal-bishop in February.

After the new pope was named, Donald Trump said: “Congratulations to Cardinal Robert Francis Prevost, who was just named Pope. It is such an honor to realize that he is the first American Pope. What excitement, and what a Great Honor for our Country.

“I look forward to meeting Pope Leo XIV. It will be a very meaningful moment!”
