The Los Angeles Rams just made one of the biggest swings in modern NFL history, acquiring superstar edge rusher Myles Garrett in a blockbuster deal that signals one thing: they’re all-in on another Super Bowl run at SoFi Stadium.

But to understand why the Rams pushed so aggressively to land him, you have to understand who Garrett is and how he became one of the most dominant defensive players of his generation.

Texas phenom

Born Dec. 29, 1995, in Arlington, Texas, Garrett was a prodigy long before he became a Pro Bowl fixture. At Martin High School, he was a multi-sport standout in football, basketball and track.

On the football field, he terrorized opposing quarterbacks with 19.5 sacks as a senior while earning the prestigious Landry Award as the top player in the Dallas-Fort Worth area.

Rated a five-star recruit and the No. 1 defensive end in the country, he committed to Texas A&M as one of the most hyped prospects in years.

College game-wrecker

Garrett delivered immediately in college. As a true freshman in 2014, he broke Texas A&M’s freshman sack record in just six games and set an SEC freshman mark with 11.5 sacks. By his sophomore year, he led the SEC in sacks and became a unanimous All-American.

Even through injuries in his junior season, he still earned unanimous All-American honors and left college as one of the most feared pass rushers in the nation.

Instant NFL superstar

That dominance carried straight into the NFL. The Cleveland Browns selected Garrett No. 1 overall in the 2017 NFL Draft, where he quickly became the franchise’s cornerstone and all-time sack leader.

Over his career, he has earned multiple Defensive Player of the Year awards, seven Pro Bowl selections, and five first-team All-Pro honors. In 2025, he set the NFL single-season sack record with 23.

His career has not been without controversy. In 2019, Garrett was suspended indefinitely after an on-field incident involving the Steelers, in which Garrett struck Pittsburgh quarterback Mason Rudolph with a helmet. Garrett missed the final six games of the season.

He was reinstated from the suspension on February 12, 2020. He later apologized for his actions, which he described as “foolish” and “out of character.”

Off the field, Garrett is known for his creativity and personality — writing poetry, engaging in charitable work, and investing in sports ownership, including a stake in the NBA’s Cleveland Cavaliers. As of 2025, Garrett is in a relationship with Olympic gold medalist snowboarder Chloe Kim.

Now, Garrett arrives in Los Angeles as the centerpiece of a Rams defense built to win immediately. For a franchise that lives by “F— them picks,” he represents exactly that: a rare, game-wrecking talent acquired for one goal — another championship.
