Whiten your dirty stained socks with mum’s £1.19 saviour item – ‘nothing works better’

A bottle of bleach may seem tempting to reach for when washing socks, but this can actually cause this laundry item to turn yellow and discolour.

To achieve the bright white look, a cleaning fan has shared a natural product which can easily rid of dirty stains.

Taking to the Mrs Hinch Army Cleaning Tips, one woman expressed her gratitude to the group for a recommendation for whitening socks she found and tested out.

Shelley Odam couldn’t believe how well the laundry hack worked. She wrote: “To whomever it was who recommended Elbow Grease for white socks. Thank you so much. It’s my saviour!”

“Finally something that works! I have been following many different questions on how to get white socks white again and tried many different suggestions without any luck.

“I do have a dog, cat, toddler and five-year-old so I’m sure you can imagine my kitchen floor can get pretty dirty however many times I wash it.

“So the white socks in our household are pretty dirty. I really wish I had taken before pictures, but after trying so many other methods I didn’t hold out much hope. But lo and behold my white socks are white once again. This is literally the best, nothing works better.”

“For anyone wanting to give it a go, I literally just sprayed the bottom of each sock and popped it in the washer with my regular persil on a 40-degree wash.

“One pair of my daughters that she wore at soft play was particularly bad I gave a bit of a rub together after spraying but nothing much and it worked fantastically. Happy washing.”

Sharing an after picture, Shelley’s white socks were dazzling bright – and there were no signs of any stains.

Fellow group members took to the cleaning page to share their thoughts on this.

Sue SteveWilson-Brown said: “I used Elbow Grease for the first time yesterday. It’s amazing stuff! Cleaned my cooker backsplash a treat.”

Helen Lake commented: “I use Elbow Grease on all my washing to get stains and dirt out. I just spray on then put in a normal wash. Works a treat.”

Nikki Anne wrote: “I use Elbow Grease for every stain, even dried nose bleeds and has never let me down. It’s a staple with my washing now.”

Kerry Hughes replied: “I swear by the stuff, it’s amazing and doesn’t have a harsh smell to it either.”

Nikki Louse said: “Love Elbow Grease! Works for everything. Today I managed to get red lipstick out of a white top using this.”

Express.co.uk found that B and M is the cheapest place to pick up a bottle of Elbow Grease – for just £1.19.
