Wheeler Dealers presenter Mike Brewer has explained how motorists can get a “much better deal” on second-hand used cars following a simple tip.

The host of the classic car TV show said motorists could secure a better arrangement by deciding to part exchange their vehicles.

This is when motorists trade in their current vehicle for a new one, using the value of their old model as a down payment towards the new car.

Dealerships will assess the value of a model and then take this off the price tag of another purchase.

However, Mike stressed this approach may only work if motorists have a “sellable car” that is sure to attract the attention of dealers.

Previously speaking to Car Dealer Magazine, Mike said: “If you’ve got a that’s a sellable car, choose the right dealer to go and do a deal with.

“If you’ve got a decent part exchange, they are more likely to do a much, much better deal with you.

“A dealer would be happy to do a much better deal with you on your part exchange, therefore giving you a much better deal on the car you’re buying in the hope he can put your car in stock and sell it again.

“Make sure if you’ve got a good part exchange. If you’ve got a decent car, clean it, make sure it’s really presentable and choose the right dealer to take it to and change up your car. That is very important.”

Experts at Motorway.co.uk stress part exchanging a model is one of the “easiest ways” to sell a vehicle.

However, used car experts at Cinch admitted motorists may not receive the biggest fee if they rely on a part exchange over selling a car themselves.

Cinch explained “While there are plenty of benefits to part exchanging a car that’s worth more, it can be difficult to find a dealer who will agree.

“They’re not always happy to pay the cash difference, so make sure you check this ahead of time.

“You might be able to get more for your current car if you’re willing to go through the hassle of selling privately, as you can set a price and negotiate with the buyer. There’s usually no room for negotiation when it comes to part exchange.”
