Welsh minister who led hated 20mph speed limit rollout quits as fury continues

The Welsh Government minister who led the 20mph speed limit rollout is set to quit his role. Lee Waters, the deputy minister for climate change and transport, will leave the post in two weeks when Welsh First Minister Mark Drakeford is replaced.

Welsh Tory leader Andrew RT Davies said: “Motorists and business owners across Wales will breathe a sigh of relief at this news.

“The Deputy Minister’s time in post has been characterised by one anti-motorist policy after another, slowing Wales down and doing serious damage to our economy.

“It’s time to scrap the road building ban, scrap the 20mph speed limit, and implement a transport policy that gets Wales moving.”

The next Welsh first minister is due to be announced on 16 March and is expected to make changes to the cabinet.

In a post on X, Mr Waters said: “Over the last 15 years I’ve spent far too much time on Twitter.

“It stopped being fun a while ago but I now get a pile of malign comments for even the most innocuous posts.

“When I leave my transport role in a fortnight I’ll be deleting my account. Elon can shove it up his X.”

Mr Waters survived a vote of confidence in the Senedd last year in the wake of the rollout of the 20mph speed limit on restricted roads in Wales in September.

The Labour-run Welsh Government has said that slashing the speed limit would protect lives and save the NHS in Wales £92million a year.

But the move has sparked widespread fury with a petition demanding it be scrapped surpassing 469,000 signatures.
