Britons basking in warm autumn heat and blue skies should enjoy it while they can – as new maps reveal a 1000-mile Atlantic storm is heading to the UK. This week we are set to enjoy largely dry and settled weather across the country, with sunny spells and only a few areas of patchy cloud.
In fact the forecast for the whole week looks mainly pleasant and dry with only a few scattered showers and breezes in the north-west of England. But new WXCharts.com weather maps for the beginning of October tell a completely different story.
Friday October 3rd shows a huge dark red 1,000-mile storm front bringing heavy showers that will soak swathes of the UK from Kent up to Stornoway in north-west Scotland’s Outer Hebrides.
The alarming storm front sweeps in from the Atlantic, across Ireland and Wales and smashes across the west of the UK by 6am, soaking most regions and it passes into the east of Britain.
It is too early for the Met Office to issue any weather warnings but the latest charts show 10-20mm per hour of rainfall could be expected in small pockets as the front passes west to east.
Tomorrow, it will remain largely dry and settled across the UK with sunny spells and some areas of patchy cloud. A few showers are still possible in the far north and far south-east though.
Wednesday and Thursday will be largely dry days with variable cloud and sunny spells. Just the odd light shower possible locally. Turning breezier in the north-west.
Friday looks to turn breezier more widely, with sunny spells variable cloud and the odd shower. In the evening, a band of rain may sweep in from the west.
The Met Office’s long-range forecast for Friday 26 Sep to Sunday 5 Oct warns of rain and strong winds:
It reads: “Continuation of the settled weather of the previous few days into Friday for most. Dry for the vast majority, with light winds and sunny spells by day; overnight there will be a risk of mist or isolated fog patches.
“However we then enter into a very uncertain period as thicker cloud and outbreaks of rain try to push in from the Atlantic.
“Confidence in any breakdown to unsettled weather however is very low, influenced by ex-Hurricane Gabrielle, which may approach the UK during this time.
“On balance some rain, and potentially some strong winds are likely to affect at least the west of the UK. The following week will most likely see a west to east split, with wettest weather remaining in western areas. Temperatures around to above average.”
