So much for little April showers – as for much of the UK it’ll soon be snow bearing down in freezing temperatures.
Dramatic new weather maps have revealed that on Saturday, April 27 a vast area of Scotland will be slammed by snow – from Durness in the northern tip of the country down to Glasgow.
But that doesn’t mean that the rest of Britain will escape Scot-free, as near freezing temperatures with reign – struggling to just over 0C in many parts of the country.
On Sunday, April 28 the maps from WXCharts show that there will be a low of -2C near Dornie, Scotland.
The map also predicts 0C from Inverness, in the north of Scotland all the way down to Kielder Forest in England and the length of the Pennines.
On the same day Leeds will see temperatures of 0C and with London only reaching a chilly 3C.
Jim Dale, a senior meteorologist at British Weather Services, even predicts lows of -4C in some parts of the UK.
He said: “You are correct, might even get to as low as -4C in the Scottish glens if things play out from Friday, April 26 – a slack northerly drag and clear skies combining being the reason.
“Somewhat unusual for the time of year but not unheard of.
“Even inland parts of England and Wales may see some limited frost at this time, extending for a couple of days.”
He added: “Gardeners beware!”
However, the long range weather forecast from the Met Office – that covers from Monday, April 22 until Wednesday, May 1 – predicts average temperatures.
It said: “This will generally be a settled period with high pressure close to the UK throughout. Most locations will remain dry, with variable cloud cover.
“Although some small areas or bands of thicker cloud, hill fog, and patchy light rain or drizzle will float about day to day.
“There will also be a few showers, most likely in the east and south of England. Temperatures will often be around average by day, although with mostly light winds and clear skies it will feel warm in any sunshine.
“Overnight where cloud breaks allow, frosts are likely in rural areas. As already mentioned, winds will mostly be light, although slightly stronger winds are likely in the far southeast at times.”
