'We do things differently at our pub – that's why we're some of the only ones thriving'

The takings at a unassuming pub have bucked a nationwide trend – increasing “six fold” in the face of widespread financial challenges.

That’s according to the landlady of the Red Lion in Badlesmere, Kent, who believes it is one key change that sets her establishment apart from others. Known as the “gluten-free pub”, things have not been better for the venue when Lisa Burton took it over seven years ago.

She puts the success down to “hard work”, “a fun atmosphere” – and being the only pub in the county to offer a fully gluten-free menu. The 56-year-old, who has lived in Kent for the past 20 years, said she wants to let the public know that not all pubs are struggling.

“When we first came here, the pub was only taking in just over £1,500 a week,” she said. “Now, our business takes around £10,000 a week. It has taken a lot of hard work, but I absolutely love my job, even in these tough times”.

Conditions have been gruelling for pubs across the country, with many hit by rising energy bills and increased food costs.

Others have seen a decrease in customers, as people cut back on ‘luxuries’ amid the cost-of-living crisis. In the south-east county of Kent alone there have been several that have ceased trading as a result.

But Ms Burton insists that it is not all doom and gloom. She added: “We have obviously had our quiet times over the years, but we have always remained open and I think our customers appreciate that.

“I put a lot of our success down to our fully gluten-free menu. We are the only pub in Kent like this. I think this has made us stand out along with keeping a good bar presence.”

The landlady, who previously lived in Durham, admitted that the cost-of-living crisis has impacted the pub – but said the venue’s regulars, and her own business coach, have helped her keep going.

She said: “It’s not a late-night pub but the regulars really help us out. It’s a constant steady trade. My business coach also helps to keep me motivated and gives me a chance to look at the finer details.

“I am so grateful to have the best group of staff with me and they help make this pub as successful as it is.” Ms Burton describes her pub as ‘old school’, adding: “We are open all day, every day, and we have a great relationship with our customers.

“I don’t stop – it is a very busy lifestyle. But I absolutely love it.

“I want people to see that not all our pubs are struggling, and I urge people to go out and support their local as best they can.”
