We all adore our pets, but it isn’t always easy to know whether we’re genuinely giving them the care they need day to day. And for dog owners in particular, one worry comes up time and again. Are we actually walking our furry friends for long enough – or could we be falling short without realising it?

To put minds at rest, a veterinary expert recently shared guidance about dog walking. Dr Nicole Rous set out her recommendations in an informative TikTok video. So here’s what you need to know when walking your dogs this autumn.

Dr Nicole explained: “The rules are different for puppies and for adult dogs. There is a great rule of thumb for puppies – it’s five minutes per month of life, and you can do this twice a day.

“So, if you have a four-month-old puppy, four times five is 20, so you’re looking at exercising for 20 minutes twice a day. That includes walks and things like that, but it also includes exercise in the backyard and games you’re playing.”

These guidelines change when puppies reach adulthood. Dr Nicole continued: “Adult dogs average 30 to 60 minutes a day, but this one’s variable. So, if you’ve got a really active breed like a Border Collie, you’re probably looking at one to two hours.

“If you’ve got a more sedentary breed, you might be looking at two 20-minute walks a day rather than the full hour.”

Age isn’t just a factor you need to consider with puppies, because it also impacts dogs that are ageing.

The vet explained: “Now, for senior dogs, we’re at a similar level, 30 to 60 minutes, but the type of exercise is really important to look after their joints.

“We want to look at low-impact exercise, so walks. Look at the surface you’re walking on and then consider things like hydrotherapy. That’s a really good exercise for the oldies to include in their regime.”

While owners may fear taking their elderly dogs outside, Dr Nicole believes it’s “so important” to keep up with their exercise regimes.

That’s because going outside exposes your dog to a variety of smells that enrich them and prevent boredom. Plus, light walking aids joint mobility, muscle tone and circulation, which can help keep pets healthy.

Many appreciated the vet’s advice and took to the comments section to share their own experiences. One wrote: “We love long walks.”

Another said: “My dogs are walked twice a day for a minimum of 30 minutes.” And a third added: “I walk my two doggos every day. My lab stops to sniff every few steps.”

What do other experts say about dog walking?

The Royal Kennel Club advises: “Every dog owner has a duty of care to make sure that their dog gets at least one walk every day. Dog walking is something that the whole family can enjoy and, better still, it costs nothing at all – only your time.”

The experts add that the timing of these walks depends on your dog’s breed, age and needs. However, taking regular trips outdoors is recommended.

The PDSA adds: “Walking should be part of every dog’s daily routine. Most dogs need at least 1-2 walks per day (unless otherwise specified by your vet).”

Even a slow stroll is great for enrichment – our pooches love a good sniff. However, a brisk walk is great for pets who need to burn off some extra energy.

If you have any concerns about your pet’s health, you should seek advice from a vet. They can provide bespoke advice for your cute companions, as well as information about dog walking if necessary.
