Used car dealer's favourite brands are all from one country – including 'perfect' model

A used car dealership owner has revealed his four favourite brands for pre-owned vehicles, all Japanese-made, in a TikTok video.

The list of this auto boss’s top companies includes Honda, Toyota, Mazda, and Subaru, in order of preference.

This used car lot owner, Kenny (@kennycompcars), says in his clip that he prioritises these brands because they are reliable and don’t cost him much money.

Kenny noted: “I have a 2012 Honda Civic right now with 257,000 miles for sale on my lot, and I would drive that car coast-to-coast. It runs and drives perfect.”

However, Kenny highlighted possible issues drivers may have with these four brands so you can be more prepared for shopping.

If you’re looking for a more luxurious used vehicle, Kenny recommends Toyota’s subsidiary, Lexus, but doesn’t suggest shopping for Honda’s subsidiary, Acura.

Kenny says Toyota did have a few years of engines with valve seal issues, oil-burning problems, and transmission hiccups on models like the Matrix, but he still recommends the brand.

The used car lot owner notes that despite some Mazdas having “some typical issues with transmission control modules,” the problem is a reasonably cheap fix.

Kenny describes older Subaru models as carrying higher average maintenance costs for head gaskets, timing belts, and water pumps. Still, he emphasises that the brand will last once you complete this work as necessary.

This auto expert tells drivers they can spot a deficient Subaru head gasket by recognizing leaking oil spots in driveways or burnt exhaust smell.

Kenny said his son’s 2010 Subaru Forester just hit 260,000 miles.
