A number of jams, chutneys and pesto products are being recalled due to ingredients not mentioned on the label which could pose a “possible health risk”. Certain jars made by Anglesey Foods Ltd were found to contain barley (gluten) or sulphites not mentioned on the label.
A notice issued by the Food Standards Agency said: “This means the products are a possible health risk for anyone with an allergy or intolerance to barley or gluten, or with coeliac disease, and/or a sensitivity to sulphur dioxide or sulphites.” Around one in 100 people in the UK are thought to have coeliac disease, an autoimmune condition triggered by gluten intolerance, while others have a lower level of sensitivity.
Sensitivity to sulphite can cause symptoms such as wheezing, chest tightness and in rare cases anaphylaxis, particularly for people with asthma.
The notice added: “If you have bought the any of the above products and have an allergy to barley (gluten) and/or sulphites, do not eat them.
“Instead return it to the store from where it was bought for a full refund.” Allergy support organisations have also been asked to alert their members.
Welsh brand Anglesey Foods Ltd is known for its artisanal products.
