Hidden beneath the surface of central Turkey lies one of the world’s most fascinating archaeological wonders.

Discovered by accident in 1963, when a resident knocked down a wall in his basement to reveal a hidden passageway, Derinkuyu was soon recognized as an architectural marvel.
The city features an extensive network of tunnels, chambers, and passageways, with all the amenities of a functioning settlement.
Residents had access to living quarters, stables, churches, storage rooms, kitchens, wineries, and even schools, all built underground to provide protection during times of conflict.
One of Derinkuyu’s most remarkable features is its advanced ventilation system, which ensured that fresh air could reach even the deepest levels of the city.
Additionally, large circular stone doors, weighing hundreds of kilograms, could be rolled into place to seal off sections of the city in case of attack.
A standout feature of Derinkuyu is the cruciform church, located between the third and fourth levels. With its barrel-vaulted ceiling, it is a rare architectural element for an underground structure and speaks to the religious significance of the city.
The underground network was used at various times throughout history by early Christians seeking refuge from Roman persecution and later by Byzantine communities fleeing Arab raids.
Opened to the public in 1965, Derinkuyu offers a glimpse into a forgotten world. However, only about 10% of the city is accessible to visitors today.
