UK’s worst city for rubbish complaints revealed – it’s not Birmingham | UK | News

Britain’s rubbish crisis has been hitting a new low every day with residents across the various cities raising concerns about the waste management. A new analysis has revealed the country’s worst city for rubbish complaints and surprisingly it’s not Birmingham.

Birmingham has been experiencing a major garbage issue due to an ongoing bin workers’ strike that began in early 2025. The strike, led by over 350 members of the Unite union, escalated into indefinite action in March, following disputes over job cuts and pay reductions. However, according to the research conducted by the experts Rainbow Rubbish Removals, there is another city where residents have raised bin complaints.

According to the research, Bradford has the most severe bin complaints, with a complaint intensity score of 9.62/10.The city in West Yorkshire has the highest rate of serious bin complaints in the UK, with nearly a third marked as urgent and over a third related to health issues like rats or bad smells.

Although the city only gets about 7 complaints per 10,000 people—much fewer than other places—the high percentage of serious cases makes it stand out in national data.

Miroslav Radov, waste expert at Rainbow Rubbish Removals said: “Bin complaints might seem minor, but they’re a clear warning sign of wider problems in our waste systems. Reports of overflowing rubbish, missed collections, and vermin reflect both stretched local services and growing community frustration. These aren’t just appearance issues, they pose genuine health and environmental risks.

“With major recycling reforms underway to standardise collections and reduce landfill, councils are under pressure to adapt. Rising landfill taxes, stricter recycling targets, and growing populations are making waste management one of the most pressing public services.

“If these challenges aren’t tackled head-on, we risk not only more complaints but also greater health risks and lower public confidence in recycling. Investment, better communication, and smarter waste solutions will be key to ensuring efficient service delivery and safeguarding community well-being.”

Glasgow has the second highest bin complaint intensity in the UK, scoring 9.23 out of 10, with most complaints about overflowing bins (28.5%) and health concerns (20.6%).

Edinburgh ranks fifth with a score of 8.08, showing similar issues but with slightly lower percentages.

Bristol comes third, with 59.1% of its complaints about overflowing bins, despite having far fewer total complaints than London.

London ranks ninth with a score of 6.54, where overflowing bins and health concerns make up a smaller share of its many complaints.

Nottingham is tenth, scoring 6.15, with fewer overall complaints but a high share of serious issues like bad smells and vermin, which raises its intensity score.
