UK weather maps turn blue as Britain disappears under huge 870-mile blanket of rain

Britons should be braced to break out the brollies this week as an enormous wall of rain descends on almost every bit of the country on Wednesday.

The kraken-like cascade will engulf almost everywhere from the Orkney Islands to Land’s End, with only the Shetland Islands and parts of Northern Ireland escaping the worst of it.

An 870-mile long band of rain will develop, bringing more rain to some areas already suffering from the effects of flooding after a wet and stormy winter.

Yellow weather warnings for rain have been issued by the Met Office for much of South Wales stretching from Pembrokeshire to Cardiff and for all of Devon, Cornwall and large parts of Somerset and Dorset.

A Met Office spokesperson said: “Heavy rain will spread across Wales and southwest England from early on Wednesday morning.

“Rainfall amounts will widely reach 15-25 mm, with as much as 50-70 mm over higher ground.

“With saturated ground in places, this is likely to lead to some disruption. Rain will clear to the east by the afternoon.”

Yellow Warnings mean people should plan ahead for adverse weather conditions. For this level of warning homes and businesses could be flooded and public transport may be affected. Driving could also prove tricky with excess spray on the roads leading to longer journey times.

A warning of heavy rain in the west comes just days after a yellow warning was issued for the east of the country for flooding, covering Bedfordshire, Buckinghamshire, Cambridgeshire, Essex, Hertfordshire, Norfolk, Northamptonshire and Suffolk.

And later this month, despite a relatively warm February, long-range charts show a large band of wintry weather heading towards the UK.

According to the forecasters at WX Charts, a band of snow stretching from North Wales to South Wales and eastwards to the mouth of the Thames in Essex and Kent may arrive on February 26 at around 6am.
