UK weather maps turn blue and 886-mile storm swamps almost every inch of Britain

New weather maps show a huge band of rain engulfing almost the entire country in the coming days with an 886-mile-long deluge.

Images from WXCharts show a massive weather front bringing precipitation, marked in blue, which stretches from the far north of Scotland down to the Channel Islands.

The inclement weather is due to arrive on May 5, with further covering expected on May 6. Only central eastern Scotland appears to escape the downpours on both days.

For the rest of the country, rain will be heavy at times, with as much as 2mm falling over parts of Yorkshire.

A statement from the Met Office for the period said: “Into early May, something of a north-south split looks possible, with relatively drier conditions further to the north and the greatest chance of rain further to the south.

“Low pressure patterns continue to dominate with wet weather perhaps more likely to develop in parts of the south and east, though all parts are may see some rain at times.

“Winds further into the period mostly light to moderate. Temperatures will likely trend near or slightly above average, though some cooler interludes remain possible.”

This weekend weather experts predict more wet weather on the way, with the potential for the country’s 12th named storm of the season.

Jim Dale, senior meteorologist for British Weather Services, previously told Express.co.uk a weather build up to the west had the potential to develop over the weekend.

He said: “This system is looks unnaturally deep for the time of year and could be fairly venomous when it comes in off the Atlantic on Saturday and through Sunday.

“It is looking like a pretty ropey weekend, with heavy showers and gales which, at the moment, look like hitting southern regions while the north escapes the worst of it.”

Today:

A good deal of sunshine throughout the day with variable cloud and largely dry across the region, however there is a risk of a few isolated showers towards the Kentish coast, where it will also be breezy. Feeling cool. Maximum temperature 12 °C.

Tonight:

Any showers towards Kent at first soon dissipating to give a dry night with clear intervals and patchy cloud. Feeling cold with a chance of frost as winds fall light. Minimum temperature 3 °C.

Thursday:

Sunny spells, light winds and scattered showers expected Thursday, with showers largely dissipating overnight. Feeling cold with a patchy overnight frost. Maximum temperature 13 °C.

Outlook for Friday to Sunday:

Starting dry and cloudy, however there is an increasing risk rain will arrive from the south through this period. Rain may be heavy at times, especially on Sunday.
