UK weather maps show southern half of Britain covered in snow well into April

The latest UK weather maps show a 360 mile long band of snow across south west England and the Midlands in April.

Some 2cm of the white stuff appears across southern counties including Somerset, Wiltshire, Oxfordshire, Northamptonshire and Cambridgeshire at 6am on April 7, according to weather maps generated by WX Charts on Monday.

While WX Charts’ maps show snow in southern Britain, Netweather’s snow risk maps show none at all for the region at 6am on April 7.

Temperatures look set to linger around freezing at midday on the same date, despite the UK being in the midst of spring, according to WX Charts.

Parts of the Highlands and Grampians could see -6C if the weather maps remain as they are. The mercury across England and Wales will struggle to rise above 1C, with higher temperatures of 5C to 6C possible along the south coast.

Rainfall totals in excess of 50mm in Scotland, up to 84mm in South Wales and 78mm in Cornwall, also appear in WX Charts’ weather maps for April 7.

The Met Office’s long range forecast (March 29 to April 7) expects the Easter weekend to be unsettled with rain or showers in most regions at times, but also some drier and brighter spells.

It adds: “The heaviest and most frequent showers are more likely to be in southern and western areas. Later in the weekend, there is a chance of northern areas becoming drier with increasing amounts of sunshine.”

The Met Office says the Easter weekend is likely to be a little warmer compared to the days which follow, with unsettled or changeable weather remaining the most likely outcome.

All areas are likely to see rain or showers at times, with some drier spells in between, but wet weather will tend to favour the south while northern areas remain a bit drier on average, according to the Met Office.
