UK weather maps show 72 hours of non-stop snow to batter Britain

New maps have tracked an incoming snowy system that could leave vast tracts of the country at the mercy of flurries in just over a week.

Early weather forecasts have indicated that early April, despite being mid-spring, could turn distinctly wintry.

The last few weeks have seen temperatures start to rise towards the seasonal average into the double-figure range.

Highs in some parts of the country have even reached the low teens, around 13C, more than double some daily maximums seen earlier in 2024.

Instead of warming further, maps suggest the mercury will plummet once more and could bring widespread snow to most corners of the UK.

Maps from WXCharts show rain dominating the forecast during the last few days of March, with showers continuously moving inland from the southwest.

The rain appears unlikely to abate, the service shows and could turn to snow in some places as the UK enters April.

Charts show flurries developing over Scotland from midday on Tuesday, April 2, turning heavy in some places and tipping out between 2cm and 7cm over high ground.

By April 3, the charts suggest the snow could cover a nearly 500-mile area from northernmost Scotland to northern England.

The snowy system could extend from Wick, on the Scottish coast, to Yorkshire 468.7 miles south.

By April 5, the showers could extend past Manchester and Birmingham and drift east to cover Wales almost in its entirety, with temperatures descending back into the low single-figure range.

Maps from Netweather.tv suggest a similar forecast, with snow probability rising to 80 percent and higher in some parts of Scotland and northern England, but the risk disappears by April 5 midday.

Met Office long-range forecasts suggest that the weather will remain largely changeable and primarily wet until April 9.

The latter end of the forecast that covers March 31 to April 9 states: “All areas are likely to see further rain or showers at times, with some drier spells in between.

“The wettest weather will tend to favour the south whilst northern parts remain a bit drier on average. In general, temperatures around average, occasionally cooler in the north, and milder in the south.”
