UK weather: First signs of summer as Britain bathed in 17C sunshine next week

Storm Kathleen may have blown a gale through Britain with 70mph winds, cancelled flights and heavy rain. But sunshine may soon be on its way.

A radar from WX Charts shows balmy weather on the horizon, with most of the country in the mid-to-high teens on April 12.

Such conditions will make a marked change on the weather battering Britain today. Before 5pm there was almost 100 cancelled flights either from or into Britain.

Edinburgh had to move their Challenge Cup fixture from their small Hive Stadium to the more sheltered Murrayfield. Meanwhile, Titanic Belfast – one of the Northern Irish capital’s famous museums – was forced to shut on Saturday and it will be closed again on Sunday.

However, WX Charts’ radar is pointing to a sunnier seven days next week. According to the forecaster, on Friday evening most of the country will be bathed in sunshine.

The Home Counties will likely see the best of the conditions, with the possibility of the mercury reaching 17C in the south east. However most of England, with the exception of the north west coast, should see plenty of sun and warm weather.

Wales will be slightly cooler as will Scotland and Northern Ireland, but even then the temperatures should, for the most part, remain above 12C.

A blustery weekend with gales in the west.

This Evening and Tonight:

Staying very windy overnight, especially in the west. Spells of rain moving in from the southwest, this evening, heavy at times with the risk of thunder but moving northeastwards quickly. Largely dry with clear spells elsewhere towards dawn.

Sunday:

Windy, particularly across the northwest of Scotland. The odd shower though dry for many with a good deal of sunshine. Warm in the southeast. Temperatures nearer average in the northwest.

Outlook for Monday to Wednesday:

Winds generally lighter than the weekend though often staying windy and remaining unsettled with showers and spells of rain. Temperatures around average, possibly turning warmer in the south by Wednesday.
