A new town featuring a supermarket, food hall, and high street is set to open in Cornwall as part of a new development that was inspired by the vision of King Charles. The new town, named Nansledan, is located near Newquay and is under the Duchy of Cornwall, which used to be owned by the king and is now Prince William’s.
While huge parts of the development were built years ago, the Duchy has now started construction of Market Street, one of the town’s most anticipated areas. The high street is set to become a thriving new food, retail, office and leisure spot that will be a year-round lifestyle destination for both the locals and visitors. The town will house a new Tesco, expected to open in May 2027.
Construction of the supermarket was initially meant to begin in 2024, and the first buildings were expected to be available for occupation from 2026. However, Tesco’s building work will continue throughout 2026 and is expected to open in May the following year, reports Cornwall Live.
The entire development, directly carried out by the Duchy of Cornwall, will be delivered in two phases.
The first involves the Tesco supermarket, Market Hall including food stalls that showcase Cornish produce, a communal dining area, five shop units, and a co-working space above.
Phase two will feature 13 additional shop units, seven offices and a public courtyard, designed as a central point for outdoor dining and community events.
Tesco will be the first occupier to open in Market Street. The new 24,500 square foot supermarket will offer goods from a range of food to clothing, and provide click and collect services. It is also expected to create 100 jobs.
Marcus Vinnicombe, property acquisitions and disposals director at Tesco, said: “It’s exciting to see work starting on Market Street and our new Tesco supermarket in Nansleden.
“Together with the Duch of Cornwall, we look forward to helping Market Street become a thriving destination that serves and supports the whole community.”
The entire development is expected to be completed around May 2028.
