British tourists planning a summer holiday to Spain this year have been warned against doing one popular thing that could result in a fine of more than £400. While vaping is common in the UK, other countries take a more unsavoury view of the habit and have created laws to prohibit it.
Spain is one of these nations, though not many people are aware of this or the consequences for breaking local rules and customs. To help holidaymakers avoid costly mistakes, Electric Tobacconist created a guide outlining vaping laws in the world’s most popular destinations and the potential consequences for breaking them. Many Brits, they noted, are planning to visit countries with strict anti-vaping laws in 2025, and most may not know whether they will be breaking the local rules with their vaping habits.
Spain remains the top choice for British summer holidays, with an estimated 15.9% of Brits planning a visit this year. Of the UK’s 5.6 million vapers, nearly 900,000 could therefore be at risk of unexpected fines.
Vaping in public spaces like beaches can result in a fine of 200 euros (around £168), while vaping indoors at public venues can lead to penalties of up to 500 euros (around £420).
It’s legal elsewhere for adults but subject to restrictions in certain public spaces, including government facilities, hospitals, schools, and children’s playgrounds.
While vaping is legal, the use of e-cigarettes is prohibited in some locations, and disposable vapes are being banned due to environmental concerns.
One Sure Insurance also offered crucial advice for travellers looking to bring their e-cigarettes on holiday, urging them to check local regulations before setting off.
Its experts highlighted: “Certain countries also ban the sale of flavoured vapes, such as in the Netherlands. For those planning to enjoy their e-cigarettes in the sun, it’s vital to be informed about local laws, especially in countries like Spain where vaping is banned on certain beaches.
“Before travelling, it’s a good idea to consult government resources for your destination to ensure you’re up-to-date with current regulations, not those just on vaping.
“If you’re unsure, it’s always better to be safe and avoid vaping on beaches that may have specific laws in place.”
