UK snow maps show four-day polar blast to hit Britain from Scotland to Cornwall

The UK is set to face a brutal polar blast in the coming weeks as weather maps show snow and freezing temperatures are on the horizon. Thousands of Brits woke up to ice and frost this morning as temperatures across the UK plummeted over the weekend.

But the cold weather is set to continue into the remainder of January, with four-days seeing a polar blast that could cause chaos on the roads.

From Friday, January 19 temperatures are set to drop, with the possibility of snow falling across Scotland and southern parts of the UK including London, Kent, Cornwall and Birmingham.

From Saturday, January 20, temperatures could drop to below 0 across the UK, making a chilly start for most.

Monday, January 22 will see rain across Northern Ireland, while areas in the west – including Wales – could see more snowfall.

According to weather maps from WXCharts, the snow could continue throughout the day, spreading to the midlands and Manchester.

Maps suggest Manchester could see 6cm of snow, while Birmingham will see 1cm. Wales could reach 5cm and northern Scotland will have around 20cm of snow.

It comes after parts of the UK saw its first snow of the year on Monday, with reports of snowfall in London and Kent this morning.

Snow began to fall in parts of south-east London around mid-morning, while the Met Office issued a yellow weather warning for snow and ice for the remainder of the day.

Pictures and videos from areas like Orpington, Croydon and Beckenham started appearing on social media at around 10.30am. Weather forecasts suggested flurries could be seen across the capital today.

The Met Office warned that temperatures are not likely to rise above 3C for the remainder of the day, with lows of 1C leading to the risk of ice forming overnight.

Forecasters have urged motorists to avoid driving in the snow and ice today, with the weather warning being lifted from 2am on Tuesday.

Today:

Any early morning fog clearing by midday. Variable cloud with sunny spells for many with the odd wintry shower across the southeast of England. Cold for most, but notably in the south in a fresh northeasterly breeze.

Tonight:

Wintry showers continue across southern parts, clearing westwards. Mostly dry elsewhere, but a widespread hard frost under any clear skies. Remaining cold with freezing fog patches for parts of Scotland.

Tuesday:
