The latest UK snow maps show large parts of the country will be blanketed this weekend as the Met Office warns of “wintery” showers.
Weather maps and data by WXCharts.com shows most of the UK covered in purple and white by midday on Saturday as the nation braces itself for snow, ice and cold weather throughout the weekend.
This show snowy weather extending from the South Coast to Yorkshire, with only coastal areas of Norfolk, Suffolk, Cornwall and parts of Devon likely to avoid at least some wintery weather.
Northern Ireland and southwest Wales could also avoid snow as could coastal areas on the northwest coast including Lancashire and Cumberland.
Weather maps suggest large parts of central Scotland could be blanketed by snow but that this is less likely along the west and north coast, although there is the risk of rain and cold temperatures in each of these parts.
Currently, there are no weather warnings in force for the weekend, although the Met Office has urged people to ensure that they keep up to date with the latest advice to ensure that they are kept abreast of information relevant to their local area.
The Met Office forecast for Friday until Sunday says: “High pressure will move away to the northeast of the UK. This will allow a cold east to southeasterly wind to develop, introducing more cloud and some showers, perhaps wintry.”
The weather data comes as the Met Office warns of a cold weekend for many following a week that has seen temperatures dip below freezing for much of the UK.
Met Office Chief Meteorologist Frank Saunders said: “It’s worth being aware that despite a largely pleasant week ahead, there’s a good chance the UK will experience a dip in temperatures at the weekend and into next week.
“High-pressure is set to move in, bringing along with it easterly winds, low temperatures and an increasing risk of wintry hazards like snow and ice.
“We’ll know more as the week goes on so it’s worth keeping up-to-date with the forecast in your area.”
High pressure often brings clear skies, such as what has been seen across most of the country this week, and often leads to cold nights, frost and fog.
