UK snow latest: Maps show three days of widespread chaos set to batter Britain

A weather expert has said the UK will be on the receiving end of a turbulent barrage of snow, frost and rain in the coming days. Jim Dale, a senior meteorologist for British Weather Services, said Scotland will unsurprisingly see chilly lows into the first days of March.

Speaking to Express.co.uk, he said: “It’ll be up and down, backwards and forwards – early spring somersaults. Scotland will be seeing some chilly lows like last night (-6C) and there will be frosts for most going forward but they tend not to last in the mixed weather portfolio.”

The south is unlikely to see any snow flurries, but will more than likely see heavy rain – a theme the Met Office has said will continue throughout nearly all of March.

Mr Dale added: “It won’t be silly mild or warm going forward, cold days will rule up to mid month in my opinion, but not to any serious extent. Rainfall and local flooding remains a bigger risk.”

But new maps pinpoint March 10 as the date when sporadic flurries of snow will likely carpet parts of northern England and Scotland, including Newcastle and rural parts of Yorkshire. Northern Ireland is also likely to see a wide snow barrage, maps predict.

Netweather GFS runs show snow lingering to the west of the nation before unleashing hell in Britain over the period of three days.

From Saturday, March 9 snow will start to fall across the north western coast, encapsulating large parts of Merseyside, the Scottish border and parts of Yorkshire.

This will carry on into Sunday, March 10 when snow risk maps indicate large areas of Wales are due to be hit in areas as low down as Birmingham. The south, it seems, will remain unscathed. By Monday, March 11 the now plume appears to push west – leaving the UK entirely.

Despite the dramatic maps pinpointing flurries, its thought snow will only lay in the north where temperatures will be lowest.

The Met Office’s newly released long-range forecast said “colder interludes will be short-lived” thoughout the month.

Looking from March 9 to 29 it says: “A broad band of cloud and rain likely spreading across much of the UK through Thursday morning, and it will be windy at times particularly in the northwest.

“It is likely turning increasingly showery across north-western areas, as some drier spells develop in the east.

“From Friday and through the weekend, generally unsettled conditions with areas of showers sometimes banding together for longer spells of rain, this heavy at times.

“There will be clearer spells overnight with some frost or fog patches developing. Into the new week conditions move to occasional frontal systems affecting further western areas with occasionally more settled spells developing in eastern areas as settled conditions spread out from northern Europe.

“It will be remaining around average temperatures for the time of year though some short-lived colder interludes remain likely.”
