Heavy snow and torrential rain are set to hit parts of the UK as weather maps reveal a 24-hour winter blitz impacting several major cities. Weather maps from WXCharts indicate widespread snowfall across central and northern regions, with heavy rain also affecting southern areas.

According to the latest GFS model run for the British Isles, a powerful weather system will sweep across the UK, bringing a mix of snow and heavy rain from Wednesday, March 20, into Thursday, March 21. The worst-affected areas are expected to include parts of northern England, the Midlands, and Wales.

Cities forecast to experience snowfall include:

  • Manchester
  • Newcastle
  • Birmingham
  • Cardiff
  • Belfast
  • Edinburgh

Heavy snowfall is projected across higher ground, while lower elevations may experience sleet and rain.

The chart shows a significant accumulation of snow in parts of the Midlands and northern England, with the potential for some areas to receive several centimetres within a short timeframe.

Meteorologists suggest that the wintry conditions could persist beyond this 24-hour period, with the potential for further cold spells leading into late March.

However, the exact severity and duration remain uncertain.

A Met Office long range forecast for Thursday, March 20, to Thursday, April 3, states: “Confidence is low, but through the remainder of March changeable weather patterns are most likely.

“This means periods of unsettled, wet and windy weather interspersed with some drier and brighter spells.

“Into early April, there may be a transition to drier and more settled weather. Temperatures will probably be above average overall.”
