A warm start to spring could be short-lived as weather maps predict heavy snow across the country at the end of the month. Newly released weather data released by WXCharts.com shows 42 counties blanketed in snow on 29 March. The weather maps from WXCharts.com show a band of snow blitzing the spine of the country from 6am, with the weather staying put for much of the morning and into the afternoon.

A Met Office long-range forecast for the period stopped short of agreeing with the weather experts, warning instead of “unsettled conditions” as March comes to a close. It said: “Into the following week, unsettled conditions will probably continue across many parts of the UK.

“Some heavy rain or showers are possible at times, these most likely across southern parts of the country.”

The weather maps show much of Scotland covered in snow of varying severity, with some parts of the country seeing as much as 7cm of snow every hour throughout the morning.

The snow looks set to stretch into England, with Newcastle, Blackpool and Manchester likely to blanketed.

The south of the country will largely escape snow but will be drenched in showers, with as much as 10mm per hour falling on eastern parts of the UK to ensure a miserable day for most Britons.

Later in the day, the rain will push westwards, covering much of Wales and reaching Cornwall and the south west, whilst the snow in England will begin to recede.

The warning of snow comes as meteorologists struggle to keep up as weather maps flitter between snow and rain and sun and high temperatures.

The wintry weather will come a week after temperatures across the UK are expected to peak higher than popular holiday destinations such as Corfu and Ibiza.

Met Office meteorologist Becky Mitchell spoke about the unusual spike in temperature which is expected to happen on Thursday.

She said: “We’re expecting quite a lot of dry weather, increasing amounts of sunshine as we head through the next few days.

“By Wednesday, we’re looking at highs of about 17C in the South. And then on Thursday, we could get as high as 19C.”
