Brits have been advised to avoid one dish at their local fish and chip shop. Fish and chips are an iconic British dish that many of us eat regularly. There are some amazing fish and chip shops dotted around the country, some of which are said to be the best in all of Britain. Regular orders for hungry Brits include cod, hake, battered sausages, and mushy peas. But there are other dishes that regularly appear on the menus of our local chippies that we might be tempted to try.

One person, who spent five years working at various fish and chip shops, has revealed the one item that he would never order. In fact, he said, if you have a craving for this food, it is probably best to go somewhere else for it. Instead, opt for a properly cooked fish and chips or another classic, such as battered sausages with chips, from your local chip shop. Jordan Luxford offered up his expert opinion on what not to order at your local fish and chip shop.

He revealed: ” I would never order a fried beef burger! If you want a decent burger, get it from a shop with a hot plate to cook it on.

“If you want a freshly cooked item, go for something that isn’t in the glass top under the lights – but we would cook anything fresh if a customer asked anyway.”

He added: “Fried chocolate bars have always been popular, too. We would usually cook them for free alongside an order and as we wouldn’t have the chocolate bars in stock, the customer would be asked to bring them with them and we would cook them at the same time as the rest of their order.”

“The amount of preparation time needed to get everything ready before opening was a huge surprise,” he continued. “It takes hours to cut a Friday night’s fish and even more hours to peel, inspect and cut 20 bags of potatoes.

“Prep for a Friday night, opening at 5.30pm would start at 10am.”

Locval fish and chip shops are feeling the effects of increased ingredient costs. One owner, Ian Stead, who runs Steels Corner House Restaurant in Cleethorpes, said: “We are not making any money and because of the cost of living crisis, we can’t put our prices up enough, because we know that our customers are struggling as well.”
