Brits are being recommended of this easy hack that will banish bad odours from fridges, and it involves a common kitchen staple that many will already have in their homes.
The trick is chemical-free and low effort which make its the ultimate solution for “keeping your fridge fresh between deep cleans”. Many people might resort to expensive deodorisers or white vinegar, which is often used for cleanings hacks. However, a cleaning expert has revealed a far more simple way to solve the issue of bad fridge smells.
Nigel Bearman, a cleaning expert from Daily Poppins revealed just why oats work as a brilliant natural cleaner, how underrated it is, and the best way to use it.
He explains: “Dry oats are brilliant at absorbing odours and excess moisture. They act like a natural sponge, trapping smells within them and stopping the fridge from being musty. It’s a chemical-free way to keep it fresh, and it cost next to nothing.”
Cleaning fridges is a chore that many people do not like doing. However, regardless of whether it is enjoyable, it has to be done. Therefore, using this hack to ensure your fridge stays fresh between deep cleans, will ensure that you don’t have to clean your fridge more often than needed.
In order to use oats to neutralise fridge smells, the expert recommonds pouring a small handful of plain, dry oats into a ramekin or open jar and placing it on the middle shelf or in the salad drawer. The jar of oats should be left there for a week or two and then replaced if needed.
Over time, the oats work slowly to draw in moisture and neutralise odours from “strong-smelling foods” such as cheese, and leftovers.
“Oats are underrate natural cleaners. They’re gentle, absorbent, and completely safe to use around food, making them ideal for the fridge where you want to avoid harsh chemicals,” Nigel adds.
To give the hack a little boost, you can even add essential oils, such as lemon or lavender, to create a scented deodoriser.
The trick can also be used in cupboards, under the sink, or in shoe drawers, and once you’re done with the oats, make sure to put them in a compost bin so there is zero waste.
