UC Berkeley rocked by two deaths in two days on campus

An elite college’s campus has seen two deaths in a 24-hour span this week, rocking the local community there.

A 21-year-old student at the University of California, Berkeley, fell to his death near a residence hall on Tuesday, before another person was found dead in the bushes near Sproul Hall the next day, the Berkeley Scanner reported.

Campus police do not suspect foul play in either death, and there’s no indication that they’re connected.

The second person found was not affiliated with the university, the Scanner reported, and appeared to be in his late 40s or early 50s. It’s unclear how he died.

“We are saddened by this tragic news,” university spokesman Adam Ratliff told the Scanner about the deaths.

A statement from the office of a student government senator at the university, Nicole Nuñez-Rivera, said they would like to extend their condolences “to all those impacted by these tragedies.”

“We recognize that the nature of these events are still under investigation,” the statement said. “However, it does not take away from the heavy burden these deaths place on the hearts of our campus community.”

The senator’s office asked students devastated by the events to access student psychological help and other resources available.

Investigations into both deaths remain ongoing. The Alameda County Medical Examiner is expected to determine the cause of death in both cases.

Social media commenters reacted to the deaths.

“Why are there 2 dead bodies in less than a day…” one person wrote on Instagram.

“2 Students found dead!! What is Cal doing to help these students??” another added.

“Whats going on berkeley,” a third wrote.

UC Berkeley is a highly selective elite university just north of Oakland in the Bay Area.
