Vladimir Putin agreed to allow the US and Europe to provide Ukraine with a NATO-like security guarantee, it has been claimed. Donald Trump’s special envoy, Steve Witkoff, provided further details about the high-profile meeting that took place in Alaska on Friday between the Russian and US presidents.

He told CNN: “We got to an agreement that the United States and other European nations could effectively offer Article 5-like language to cover a security guarantee.” Article 5 is a cardinal principle of NATO, and states that an attack on one member country could be considered an attack on all members – potentially dragging the whole Western military alliance into a war.
