Donald Trump has been busy ranting and raving about all manner of left-field topics tonight, this time regarding the misuse of public funds in a disjointed speech that touched on topics such as condoms and circumcision. This follows his verbal clash with Volodymyr Zelensky over the handling of the war in Ukraine.
Relations took a nosedive today when Zelensky accused Trump of existing in a Russian-created “disinformation space”, while the US president labelled the Ukrainian leader “a dictator without elections'” Zelensky also expressed his wish for Trump’s team ‘to be more truthful’ as he responded for the first time to a series of bold claims made by Trump the previous day, including the false implication that Kyiv was responsible for the war.
Just this evening, Trump has been speaking at the FII PRIORITY Summit investment conference in Miami, Florida, where he began listing various ways his administration had saved on public spending, and repeating the false and previously debunked claim that the previous administration of Joe Biden had allocated $100 million in condoms for Hamas.
In a peculiar statement, he said: “10 million dollars for Mozambique medical male circumcision! What does that mean!”
He continued: “$50m plus another $50m for condoms for Hamas. You know about that? $100m for condoms! Does everyone know what a condom is?”
The audience responded with confused laughter.
Trump was making the claim while detailing, at some length, what he claims is wasteful spending exposed by Elon Musk’s Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE),
However, Musk was last week forced to admit that the funds for contraceptives were not earmarked for Hamas or the Gaza Strip, but were foreign aid for a province in Mozambique, Africa. Trump’s White House claimed the figure was $50 million, but Trump has since twice claimed that it is $100 million.
Trump has stunned the world with his words today, calling Zelensky a “dictator” and criticising him for the Ukraine war, which began when Russia invaded unprovoked – and he repeated all these claims at the FII PRIORITY Summit tonight.
A war of words has erupted between the leaders of two nations that had previously enjoyed a strong alliance under Trump’s predecessor. During Joe Biden’s presidency, the US provided vital military aid to Ukraine to resist the invasion and leveraged its diplomatic influence to defend Ukraine and isolate Russia globally.
However, the Trump administration is now pursuing a different path, engaging with Russia and pushing for a peace agreement. High-ranking officials from both countries met on Tuesday to discuss improving relations, negotiating an end to the conflict, and potentially arranging a meeting between Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin after years of strained relations.
Trump took to social media to lash out at Zelensky, reported the Mirror, branding him “a modestly successful comedian” who “talked the United States of America into spending $350 Billion Dollars, to go into a War that couldn’t be won, that never had to start, but a War that he, without the U.S. and ‘TRUMP,’ will never be able to settle.”
The president continued, saying that Zelensky’s only skill was “was good at was playing Biden ‘like a fiddle.'” He warned Zelensky to “move fast or he is not going to have a Country left.”
Meanwhile, Putin expressed his desire to meet with Trump. Russia’s military incursion into Ukraine on February 24, 2022, has been framed by Putin as a necessary action to protect civilians in eastern Ukraine.
He also blamed the US and its allies for not addressing Russia’s demands to stop Ukraine from joining NATO and failing to provide security assurances to Moscow. The attack has been widely condemned by Ukraine and Western nations as an unjustified act of aggression.
In televised remarks, Putin expressed his openness to discussions: “I would like to have a meeting, but it needs to be prepared so that it brings results,” adding that he would be “pleased” to meet with Trump. However, he acknowledged that the US president has realised that reaching a Ukrainian settlement might take longer than expected.
