Travellers warned to 'reconsider' going to Jamaica before Harry and Meghan visit

The advisory notes that US government personnel under Chief of Mission (COM) security responsibility are prohibited from traveling to many areas due to increased risk.

Chief of Mission (COM) refers to diplomatic officers overseeing diplomatic missions and US offices abroad.

“US government personnel under Chief of Mission (COM) security responsibility are prohibited from traveling to many areas due to increased risk,” the advisory reads.

This restriction implies that COMs are not permitted to travel to certain parts of Jamaica due to the elevated crime risk, indicating potential limitations in providing assistance to American tourists in those areas.

The restricted areas, as outlined in the advisory, include parts of various parishes including St Ann’s, St Catherine’s, St Elizabeth’s, Hanover, Kingston and St Andrew, Manchester, St Thomas, Trelawny, and Westmoreland.

Specific areas within Clarendon Parish, the entire inland side of Montego Bay along the A1 highway, and The Queen’s Drive from San San to Harmony Beach Park are also included.

The overall advisory, in effect since last May, primarily emphasises concerns related to crime in Jamaica.

“Violent crimes, such as home invasions, armed robberies, sexual assaults, and homicides, are common. Sexual assaults occur frequently, including at all-inclusive resorts,” it says.

“Local police often do not respond effectively to serious criminal incidents. When arrests are made, cases are infrequently prosecuted to a conclusive sentence.

“Families of US citizens killed in accidents or homicides frequently wait a year or more for final death certificates to be issued by Jamaican authorities.”
