Having a clean and tidy bathroom isn’t just about making sure your sink is free of any toothpaste marks, or having sparkling clean shower glass.
You also want to ensure it smells fresh and clean, but this isn’t always an easy task.
Your hand towel or any other towels that you keep in the bathroom can end up smelling pretty damp and musty thanks to the warm and humid enviroment, which is never pleasant.
But according to one cleaning expert on TikTok, you can easily banish musty-smelling towels and keep them fresh if you make one simple change to the way you do your laundry.
Lifestyle influencer @mama_mila_ recently shared a video detailing some hacks that will ‘change the way you clean your bathroom’ and included one very important towel tip.
She says that by ditching your usual fabric softener in favour of one 65p item, your towels won’t smell musty any more – leaving your bathroom smelling clean and fresh once again.
Mila has hailed the benefits of white vinegar in many of her videos, and she says it can come in hugely handy when it comes to washing your towels too.
Simply add one cup into the machine instead of softener when you’re doing a load of towels, and this will act as a natural deodoriser and get rid of those damp aromas that can often crop up.
This advice was echoed by the experts at Homes and Gardens, who say that washing your towels with white vinegar doesn’t just keep them smelling fresh – but it also helps them maintain their fluffy feel as well.
They said: “It’s inexpensive and acts as a disinfectant because the acetic acid content breaks down bacteria and viruses.
“This not only thoroughly cleans, but also removes odors, so it’s a good option for older towels that seem to have a faint, lingering damp smell even when freshly laundered.
“Vinegar also removes dirt and oils, enhancing the cleaning power of your detergent, and it doesn’t have the water-repellent effects of fabric conditioner.”
The vinegar will also help to break down any lingering detergent residue, leaving them feeling soft again.
And if you live in a hard water area – something that can wreak havoc on your towels – adding a dash of white vinegar, either into the drum or the fabric softener, can help to break down the mineral deposits.
Similarly to cleaning with lemon juice, white vinegar can also leave dull towels looking brighter.
