One tourist who has visited vast amounts of the globe has shared what he thinks of England’s poorest seaside resort.
Drew Binsky shares his travels on YouTube and in one video he took a trip to a quiet part of the UK coast. Visiting Jaywick, Drew says the average household income in the area is under £28,000. In the video, he drives from London to Jaywick and Drew meets with locals who share their insight on the area. Drew says Jaywick is the “UK’s most neglected town” and he asks some passers by what they think of it.
One local says: “Jaywick gets a bad rep but the community is one of the best you’ll ever see in this world.”
Drew says: “Something about this place sets it apart from other towns in the UK.”
Another local says: “They say Jaywick is very deprived, but I think it’s good because the houses are cheap.
“I mean there’s people in London paying half a million pounds for a house, in Jaywick we pay £50,000 – way cheaper. Jaywick to me is happier.”
The man says Jaywick was historically a holiday area but after many things in the area closed such as shops and amusements, it lost its reputation for being a seaside hotspot.
Drew says Jaywick is full of surprises from its energy to its hidden quirks.
He adds that the people are happy despite some difficulties they face living there.
The tourist concludes that even though the town is one of the most deprived, he says he “kind of loves it”.
In the comments, other Brits have shared their thoughts on the area.
One person wrote: “I’m from the North East of England and it’s also more deprived and ignored than other parts of the country so it’s so cool to see you showing the communities that aren’t seen as often and the good sides of them!”
Another penned: “I live in the UK and thought I would be depressed watching this, but it was honestly so uplifting and wholesome – the people of Jaywick seem lovely.”
Tendering District Council has been contacted for comment.
