Tottenham are reportedly eyeing a double deal for two exciting English stars but Ange Postecoglou may need to wait until the summer to land both players. The Australian is desperate for new arrivals this month having seen his squad depleted by injuries.
Postecoglou described Sunday’s 2-1 defeat by Leicester as one of the club’s lowest moments of the season. The 59-year-old could name only 13 senior players in his matchday squad but later revealed that Richarlison should have come off at half-time, and that Pape Matar Sarr should not have played at all.
The Spurs boss, who is facing mounting pressure to improve results, insists he needs new signings through the door this week. He expected injured stars to begin returning in the next 10 days to two weeks.
However, it is claimed that deals for Tyler Dibling and Angel Gomes may need to wait until the summer. Spurs have reportedly held talks over both players and would ideally like to complete moves for both in January.
According to the Telegraph, it is unlikely that relegation-threatened Southampton will want to sell teenager Dibling until the summer. The playmaker has been one of very few highlights in the Saints’ season.
England midfielder Gomes is out of contract at Lille at the end of the campaign. Midfield is not an area of priority for Spurs and they will hope to land the former Manchester United star on a free transfer in the summer.
The report adds that Spurs are ‘accelerating’ discussions over both players to ensure they are ahead of the queue in the summer transfer window. The north Londoners cannot afford another slow-moving window.
Spurs will reportedly target at least one outfield signing before the January window closes. Goalkeeper Antonin Kinsky remains their only arrival this month despite a glaring need to strengthen Postecoglou’s squad.
Postecoglou is expected to survive as head coach despite successive defeats against Leicester and Everton. There is reportedly an understanding that a devastating injury crisis and a lack of transfer dealings have affected the club’s form this season.
Spurs sunk to 15th in the Premier League on Sunday and they are only eight points above the relegation zone. They have lost 13 of their 23 top-flight fixtures this term, winning just seven.
Postecoglou will take some respite from knowing that his side lead their Carabao Cup semi-final tie against Liverpool 1-0 on aggregate. They face the second leg on February 6. Spurs are also a win against Elfsborg away from being sure of qualifying for the Europa League knockouts.
