'Totally unexpected' Netflix film leaves fans asking 'what is going on'

Netflix has added a new title to its vast collection, hailed as the ‘funniest movie of the last five years’.

The film, Please Don’t Destroy: The Treasure of Foggy Mountain, is available from today (October 11).

Initially released in 2023 on US streaming service Peacock, it’s now accessible for UK subscribers.

The film marks the first full-length project from comedy group and Saturday Night Live cast members, Please Don’t Destroy, comprised of Martin Herlihy, John Higgins, and Ben Marshall.

They’re renowned for their pre-recorded digital shorts for the show, including a popular one featuring Taylor Swift.

In the film, the trio play fictionalised versions of themselves. The plot revolves around three friends, dissatisfied with their life paths, embarking on a quest for gold treasure believed to be hidden on a nearby mountain.

The film also boasts notable cameo appearances from late-night host Conan O’Brien, fellow SNL alum Bowen Yang, and comedian Megan Stalter, who has since starred in Netflix’s Too Much, reports the Mirror.

Upon its initial release, Treasure of Foggy Mountain received mixed reviews from critics. However, it has been highly praised by fans, earning an impressive 89% fan score on Rotten Tomatoes.

One fan advised others: “I didn’t know anything about this film going into it, have never heard of any of the actors/writers (besides Conan), haven’t watched SNL since the 90s, was dead sober while watching, and I found it to be absolutely hysterical. Loved it!”.

They continued: “Definitely had its strange moments like ‘WTF is going on’ and sometimes seemed like it was trying too hard, but I don’t really think that mattered in the end. You can’t take any of it seriously (they clearly didn’t), so just sit back and enjoy the ride!”.

Another viewer chimed in: “Funny, zany and totally unexpected comedy from a team that produces out of the box humour. Supporting roles from Bowan Yang and Conan O’Brien dial up the comedy fire and star power of this story.”

While one person simply stated: “The funniest film that’s come out in the past 5 years.”

Another compared it to a comedy classic: “This film was hilarious and I laughed audibly throughout. 2020s Superbad-esque with an excellent cast!”

Other fans admitted to watching multiple times and still finding themselves laughing throughout. A viewer posted: “Brilliant comedy – loved these guys on SNL, loved them in this film. Their comedic genius is unmatched and I could not stop laughing throughout the entirety of this film.”

Please Don’t Destroy: The Treasure of Foggy Mountain is streaming on Netflix.
