Top eight ways to use baking soda around your home – from laundry to ovens

1. In laundry

Baking soda can be used for a variety of jobs when it comes to laundry, including to help brighten whites, remove stains as well as clean the washing machine.

According to Deyan Dimitrov, CEO of Laundryheap, it is particularly effective when washing white clothing and towels.

It can also be used as a prewash soak to help brighten white socks by simply adding a few scoops of the product into warm water.

2. Descaling

Baking soda is a gentle abrasive, meaning it is strong enough to tackle limescale but gentle enough to not leave any scratches.

This makes it ideal for removing limescale from kettles as well as hard water marks from taps and shower heads.

Start by adding some water into the kettle before adding a scoop of baking soda and bringing the appliance to a boil.

Leave it to cool down fully before rinsing it out and reboiling fresh water to get rid of all the loose limescale.

3. Mattresses

Jonathan Warren, director of bed specialist Time4Sleep, said: “Remove your bed linen and vacuum the surface of your mattress to get rid of any dirt or debris.

“For a real deep clean, sprinkle baking soda over your mattress and leave it for up to 24 hours before vacuuming again. This will act as a deodoriser and will help to get rid of any long-lasting smells”.

4. Ovens

Baking soda is great to clean ovens and hobs with because it is strong enough to tackle the most stubborn stains.

Simply sprinkle some of the product onto the doors before scrubbing it with a damp cloth and wiping it dry. Alternatively, combine baking soda with water to make a paste before spreading this onto problem areas.

5. Fridges

Baking soda is great at tackling odours, especially in the fridge, freezer, microwave or even in cupboards.

Simply add some baking soda to a small dish and leave it wherever it is needed, swapping it for new baking soda every few days.

6. Condensation

Baking soda is great at absorbing and is therefore great at tackling excess humidity in the air which can result in window condensation.

Fill a small bowl and place it on the window sill. Over time, you will notice the baking soda will harden as it absorbs moisture from the room.

7. Cleaning pet beds

Pet beds need to be cleaned regularly to keep them smelling fresh so in-between washing machine cleans sprinkle some baking soda over the bed before vacuuming it up.

Baking soda can also be combined with white vinegar in a spray bottle for an effective deep clean.

8. Grout

To clean grout using the eco-friendly product, mix it with some water to create a cleaning paste.

Next, liberally add it to the affected grout, letting it sit for 30 minutes before taking an old toothbrush and scrubbing it into the grout, following up with a rinse of water.
