Tomatoes will taste ‘delicious’ and stay fresh for longer if you store them here

This simple tip is a game-changer for keeping tomatoes fresher for longer. When you’re buying salad items each week, it can be frustrating to see them go off so quickly. To keep tomatoes fresher for longer and preserve their flavour and texture, the most important tip is to store them at room temperature instead of in the fridge, says Better Homes and Gardens.

You should avoid putting tomatoes in the refrigerator unless they are overripe and you’re trying to extend their life for just a few more days. It’s also important to note that cold temperatures can damage the tomato’s cell structure, leading to a mealy texture and a loss of flavour.

The best place to store tomatoes is on a counter or in a cool cabinet, away from direct sunlight or any heat sources such as the stove or dishwasher.

Sarah Brekke, M.S., Better Homes & Gardens Test Kitchen brand manager, said: “Refrigeration stops the ripening process. If the tomatoes were under-ripe going into the refrigerator, the taste and texture won’t improve. There are certain enzymes in tomatoes that are responsible for creating that delicious flavour as they ripen, but these enzymes aren’t active at refrigerator temps.

“That said, if you have freshly picked or purchased ripe tomatoes and you don’t plan on eating them right away, they can be placed in the refrigerator for up to a couple of days to extend their life. For best flavour, let the tomatoes come to room temperature before serving.”

It’s also worth noting that heat and light can speed up ripening and cause the tomatoes to spoil more quickly. Instead, make sure to choose a shaded area that allows the tomatoes to breathe.

If your tomatoes are not fully ripe, you can leave them at room temperature to ripen naturally.

Once they’re perfectly ripe and you’re not ready to eat them, only then should you consider refrigeration – but allow them to return to room temperature before serving for the best taste and texture.

For extra freshness, keep tomatoes dry as moisture encourages mould and this would mean another tomato in the bin.

If you’ve cut a tomato, you should store the leftover portion in an airtight container in the fridge, cut-side down on a paper towel to absorb moisture.

There are also reusable silicone vegetable storage options which you can purchase.

This is a great option for ensuring that your vegetables stay fresh – they can be used for multiple food items and come in a variety of shapes and sizes to fit.

All you have to do is stretch the silicone over the sliced tomato or other vegetable, and it will stay fresh.

By following these easy tips you will be able to preserve their natural juiciness, sweetness, and rich flavour.
