Thousands cheered as the sun rose over Stonehenge on the winter solstice.
Pagans and druids were among those at the neolithic monument in Wiltshire who braved a blustery morning with overcast skies to mark the shortest day.
English Heritage’s Rebecca Eade said: “It was wonderful to welcome approximately 6,000 people to Stonehenge to celebrate a chilly winter solstice.
“We were delighted that a further 98,500 people watched live online from right around the world.
“It was a peaceful celebration and despite a cloudy and blustery start, people had a bright solstice sunrise.”
Stonehenge is aligned to the midsummer sunrise and midwinter sunset.
It is thought solstices have been celebrated there for thousands of years.
