As an electric car expert and founder of Electrifying.com, I drive every new EV that hits the market – and with more than 150 now on sale in the UK, that’s a lot of charging cables! But with that choice comes a huge opportunity for used buyers.
While new EVs can be more expensive upfront than petrol cars, the used market is a different story: we’ve now reached price parity, and in some cases, electric models can even be cheaper.
Over the past 12 months, some brilliant EVs have dipped below the £20,000 mark, cars that offer strong range, good tech and low running costs. So, whether you’re looking for something practical, sporty or family-friendly, these are the models I think are worth a serious look and the key things to watch out for before you buy.

5. Tesla Model 3
No used EV roundup would be complete without the Tesla Model 3. It’s been one of the best-selling electric cars globally, so there’s plenty of choice on the used market at good prices. Depending on the version, it offers 254-348 miles of range, while a 2020 facelift added a few extra miles. Charging a Tesla is stress free thanks to access to Tesla’s Supercharger network, still one of the fastest and most reliable in the UK.
Most used cars are white – the standard colour when new – with other paint and interior options commanding a premium. Battery life is excellent, and over-the-air software updates keep cars fresh. If you’re after effortless long-distance travel, and cutting-edge tech, the Model 3 remains one of the best used EV buys under £20,000.

4. Polestar 2
The Polestar 2 is a brilliant option if, like many buyers, Tesla’s controversial owner has put you off one of his cars. It’s a firm favourite of mine, combining Swedish design with Chinese engineering and built to a high standard. The Polestar 2 has matured into a real used car bargain: for under £20,000, you can find three-year-old examples with 64kWh or 78kWh batteries, both offering over 200 miles of real-world range.
Unlike the Model 3, the Polestar 2 has a hatchback boot, making it more usable. Single-motor versions are efficient and punchy, while dual-motor cars bring extra performance.
Look for cars with the Plus Pack, which adds a panoramic roof, upgraded audio and a heat pump for better cold-weather efficiency. Battery health is excellent, and over-the-air software updates keep everything current.

3. Volkswagen ID.4
The VW ID.4 is often overshadowed by flashier EVs, but it’s one of the best-value used electric SUVs around. Spacious, efficient and familiar to drive, it delivers plenty of car for the money. Two battery options were offered: 52kWh, with around 200 miles of range, and 77kWh, capable of more than 300 miles in good conditions.
Most used models are lower-trim, rear-wheel-drive versions, but they’re well equipped and easy to live with. Inside, the ID.4 offers generous space, a high driving position and a calm, refined cabin, making it a great family car. Early cars can have clunky infotainment software, so check for updates, and avoid high-mileage ex-taxis.
It’s not the sportiest EV, but for comfort, practicality and value, the ID.4 is a smart used buy.

2. Cupra Born
The Cupra Born takes the solid underpinnings of the VW ID.3 and adds sharper styling, a sportier feel and better equipment. It’s one of the most engaging small EVs to drive and a growing favourite on the used market. There are several battery options – 58kWh, 77kWh and the 79kWh VZ performance model – with up to 335 miles of range.
Even base models are quick and composed, while inside, the Born has a more premium feel and useful 385-litre boot space. Most used examples are ex-lease, so relatively new and well kept. Known issues are minor: soft paint and fiddly infotainment. High-spec cars have pricey tyres, so check for wear. Stylish, efficient and fun, the Born hits a sweet spot for used EV buyers.
