The UK's most expensive house sold for £73.2m on unassuming residential street

The priciest house sold in England and Wales last year was a whopping £72.3million, according to the latest data from the Land Registry.

The property, in London, is 42 Old Church Street in Kensington and Chelsea, which was bought for an eye-watering £73.2million in March last year.

This newly built home, part of the luxury Glebe development, is situated in one of London’s most sought-after neighbourhoods.

Despite its hefty price tag, the exterior of the house, a large grey block, doesn’t quite match the splendour of its interior, bearing more resemblance to a prison, MyLondon reported.

The second most expensive home sold in 2023 was Radlett House in Camden, costing its new owners a cool £42.9million. Meanwhile, the country’s priciest flat sold last year was Apartment 802 in 1 Ashburton Place, Mayfair, fetching £38.6million in June.

Following closely behind was 38 Clarendon Road in Kensington and Chelsea, which sold for £35million, and an apartment on Grosvenor Square, the next most expensive home in the capital at £33.9million.

Next on the list is a semi-detached house on Tregunter Road in Kensington and Chelsea, priced at £32.5million, followed by a detached house on Holland Villas Road in the same borough for £31.3million, and a £30million home on Clarendon Road.

In 2023, there were 15,689 houses sold for £1million or more in England and Wales, a decrease from 29,737 in 2022. Half of these sales were in Greater London.

Surrey accounted for another nine percent of these sales, Hertfordshire four percent, Hampshire three percent, and Buckinghamshire three percent.

Greater Manchester saw the highest number of £1million-plus home sales outside of the South, with 137 properties sold.
