Spring is just around the corner, and what better way to spend it than with a fresh-feeling walk on the Dorset coast. In particular, the 4.5-mile amble from Charmouth to Lyme Regis, following the South West Coast Path, offers everything you need for a spectacular April walk: stunning views of flourishing flowers on one side, the English Channel on the other.

Keep an eye out for a sea of bluebells on the sloped woodland known locally as the Spittles. As spring arrives, they pop out, turning the ground a bright purple. You don’t need to follow the South West Coast Path the whole journey, as its spilts off and criss-crosses with other smaller paths at several points. When you get to Lyme Regis, if you have any energy left, there is plenty to do and see.

Why not stop off for a rest at one of the town’s gorgeous seafood restaurants, before exploring the area’s independent shops.

Lyme Regis is known as the “Pearl of Dorset” for a reason: it is consistently ranked as one of the UK’s best staycation destinations thanks to its coastline, charming atmosphere, and history.

The town is situated at the heart of the Jurassic Coast, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The 95-mile coastline is renowned for its dramatic cliffs and beaches teeming with fossils, attracting geology enthusiasts and casual collectors alike.

However, the town’s popular Monmouth Beach and Lyme Bay become very busy as winter turns to spring. Fossil hunters are often spotted scanning the shoreline for ammonites, belemnites, and other prehistoric treasures embedded in the cliffs.

Lyme Regis itself is well-stocked with pubs, quaint cafes, and artisanal shops – an ideal place to explore over the spring bank holiday.

Why not try the Rock Point Inn, with its wonderful sea views. It’s a great place to enjoy a pint of local ale or a hearty meal after a long walk.

The town is also known for its galleries, showcasing work from local artists. Broad Street, in particular, offers unique pottery, handcrafted jewellery, and locally made souvenirs that capture the spirit of this coastal town.
