The Met Office yesterday issued a yellow weather warning for south-east and central Scotland, Tayside and Fife, as well as north-east England, lasting until 8am today.
Up to 20mm of rain is set to fall, with up to 40mm on east-facing hills.
The ground in affected areas is already saturated thanks to days of bad weather and the Met Office warned that further rainfall yesterday and into today could lead to localised flooding in some parts.
The Met Office also predicted that there will be further rain spreading south-east tonight and through into tomorrow morning.
Last night, some 42 flood warnings – meaning that flooding is expected – were still active in England, along with 157 lesser flood alerts, according to the Environment Agency.
However, a flood warning that had been issued for the whole of Northern Ireland was subsequently lifted.
Amid chaos on the roads, a Mini driver yesterday got stranded in water at Ingatestone, Essex. He was forced to resort to calling for help from the roof of his car.
Met Office spokesman Oliver Claydon said: “Rain overnight could cause some disruption due to its persistence, which could lead to some flooding.”
But things are likely to improve by the end of the week, he said, adding that “temperatures [could become] unseasonably warm by the time we get to the weekend”.
