The UK cities where residents are the most desperate to move house

Moving house is known as one of the most stressful things you can do in life including over having a child and getting married.

But regardless of the stress-factor of finding a new home, there are millions of Brits who are eager to take the plunge.

And a new study has revealed where in the UK people are the most keen to move on.

Topping the list – which has been compiled by Getamover.co.uk – is Lisburn, in Northern Ireland with monthly searches for terms relating to moving home averaging 37,670 per 100,000 people.

Next on the list is fellow Northern Ireland city Bangor, which claimed second place on the study with 36,083 monthly searches per 100,000 residents.

But there were also plenty of residents in English cities interested in upping sticks – with Colchester, Norwich, York and Chester ranked in places from third to sixth place on the rundown. York was recently named as the UK’s most beautiful place.

Chelmsford, Southend-on-Sea, Derby and Cambridge completed the list of the 10 UK cities most interested in moving house.

Aberdeen ranked bottom as the UK city where people are least interested in moving house and Dunfermline, also in Scotland, placed second-last in the study.

David Burrows, head of Getamover.co.uk, shared his thoughts on what was driving the ranking of the UK cities on the list.

He said: “Despite house prices rising 1.4 percent year-on-year in Northern Ireland, residents in the region still remain some of the most interested in moving house.

“House prices in Scotland have risen the most over the last year, according to the UK’s House Price Index, with the average price soaring 3.3 percent to £190,341 as of December 2023.”

He added: “With no Scottish representation in the top ranking, and Aberdeen and Dunfermline placed at the bottom of the study, you may find that aspiring homeowners in Scotland are biding their time and waiting for the prices to dip again before making their move in the property market.”

To compile the research more than 170 terms were analysed related to moving house and popular UK property portals.

An average monthly search volume was calculated for each city based on the search volumes of the past 12 months.

The cities were then ranked based on the highest average monthly search volume per 100,000 people.
