The pretty little village named one of the 'poshest' in the UK but homes cost just £283k

The cute little village of Haigh has been dubbed one of the “poshest” in the UK. Yet, despite the title, house prices in the area are below the national average.

Haigh is to be found less than five miles north east of Wigan, to the west of Bolton and not far from the city of Manchester beyond that.

Despite being nestled between bustling urban centres, Haigh feels remote, shrouded as it is by woodland.

The village’s landmark is Haigh Hall, which was built between 1827 and 1840. The Hall is surrounded by Haigh Woodland Park and the local golf course. Haigh Woodland Park hosts events throughout the year and is next door to the village’s famous windmill.

House prices in Haigh, at an average of £283k, are below the Office of National Statistics’ March 2023 national average of £304,000.

According to online estate agent Rightmove: “The majority of sales in Haigh during the last year were terraced properties, selling for an average price of £258,500.

“Semi-detached properties sold for an average of £188,800, with detached properties fetching £807,500.”

Haigh also boasts a raft of pubs and restaurants for residents and visitors to pop into. Two Left Feet Bar and Kitchen is particularly popular, as is the Balcarres Arms and The Victoria.

Raving about the Balcarres Arms, visitors took to Tripadvisor to say of the pub: “Great very friendly . Karaoke night Sunday is a must… staff owners are brilliant. Warm welcoming to all.” They added:”you may come as a stranger but you definitely leave as a friend.”

Another said: “Great hosts, staff, food and lovely location! As simple as that! Always a pleasure to visit and will definitely be going back!”

While a third added: “Called in on the way home for some food. Had Pie and Pint for under a tenner and what can I say, lovely landlord and landlady was meant to be for an hour ended up staying till last orders. Great food and great company definitely recommend A*”.
