South Africa is home to one of the largest canyons in the world and it’s no surprise that it’s one of the most popular tourist attractions in the country. The Blyde River Canyon is often compared to the Grand Canyon in the United States and the Fish River Canyon in Namibia – it takes home the title of the world’s largest “green canyon” due to its lush subtropical foliage.

Its impressive greenery and beautiful views make it one of the most visited tourist sites in South Africa. Forming the northern part of the Drakensberg escarpment in South Africa, the Blyde River Canyon consists of mostly red sandstone and lush subtropical foliage and runs for more than 16 miles.

If you’re feeling adventurous, you can head to the Three Rondavels where you can take a hike and see the incredible views of the area.

One visitor on Tripadvisor said: “We stopped at several magnificent places that you absolutely must see: Bourke’s Luke potholes, the three rondavels and the canyon of course. There is a charge for all access but the views are definitely worth the trip.

“On this road, there are also two beautiful waterfalls to see: Lisbon Falls (the most beautiful in my opinion) and Berlin Falls.”

Another penned: “An easy 5 for this truly astonishing natural wonder. The canyon offers spectacular views to all that can make the road trip after stopping along the way at the other worthwhile view points.

“The 3 Rondavels sitting above the canyon and the beautiful winding river are on another level. A day trip worth every effort.”

Another iconic tourist attraction is Table Mountain which overlooks Cape Town.

After climbing to the top, you’ll be able to see incredible views of the surrounding scenery – one visitor said: “You will not regret going.”

Other popular things to do include spotting the big five – lion, leopard, rhino, buffalo and elephant – in national parks and wildlife preserves.

You may also want to visit Kruger National Park prime game park which is home to tropical forests and mountains with more than 140 mammal species.
