The hilarious reviews left by Americans visiting Cotswolds – 'No castle in Castle Combe!'

It’s one of the most recognisably beautiful and historic parts of United Kingdom and renowned as a perfect place to settle down and enjoy the and idyllic life in the English countryside.

The Cotswolds, with its rolling hills, UNESCO World Heritage sites, and quintessential olde world architecture is home to former Prime Ministers and many who have made their money in London and are seeking a quieter life.

Favoured celebrity haunt Soho Farmhouse is nestled in Chipping Norton, an area heaving with well-healed types enjoying the rural lifestyle and historic surroundings.

But despite its bountiful natural charm, the Cotswolds have failed to rub some American visitors the right way, with hilarious results.

MyLondon reports one reviewer from Texas was very upset at the lack of a certain type of building in the stunning village of Castle Combe in an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB) in Wiltshire.

They wrote: “There is NO CASTLE in castle combe! No castle but there are remains of a castle, but you won’t see it. It is overgrown and on private property.”

Another American from Alabama wasn’t a fan of how quiet Castle Combe was, saying: “After a long walk from the car park up on a hill on a Wednesday afternoon, the village appeared to be closed.”

Another reviewer from Massachusetts took aim at Stow-on-the-Wold scoffing: “The walking tour suggests you ‘..imagine what it was like 400 years ago when…’ I guess we didn’t have enough imagination to find Stow worth the time”.

Finally even King Charles couldn’t escape the ire of tourists from the USA, with one exclaiming that during a visit to Highgrove Gardens that thought that despite having 12 gardeners “it appeared as if he needed many more”.

One famous American who definitely did like the Cotswolds was automobile pioneer Henry Ford. During a trip to Gloucestershire in the 1920s he became so besotted with the local houses that he imported an entire Cotswold cottage to Michigan.
