For decades, the line relied on carriages from the 1930s, which became a charming yet increasingly unreliable feature of the island.

In 2021, a major refurbishment brought in five District Line trains built in the 1980s. While their exteriors remain familiar, the interiors have been revamped with modern touches like USB charging ports and Wi-Fi.

The Island Line runs between Ryde and Shanklin, including a journey along the Ryde Pier.

Built in 1814, it’s the oldest pier in the UK and adds a unique backdrop to the train’s route.

Ryde is the largest town on the Isle of Wight and has much more to offer than just its unusual trains.

It’s a popular holiday spot known for its golden beaches, shopping streets, and a creative community.

Music fans might also be intrigued to learn that Paul McCartney once revealed that Ticket to Ride was inspired by a visit to the town he made with John Lennon in the early 1960s.

The town’s Ryde Beach gets glowing reviews from visitors. One TripAdvisor user described it as “beautiful,” adding: “The sea was warm and lovely to swim in. Great facilities, including toilets, cafes, and lifeguards.”

Another visitor mentioned the pier, saying, “A must-visit for all. Walk across to get the best views of the beach and the hovercrafts.”
