Just a three-hour flight from the UK is the Croatian city of Split, from which you can take an hour-long ferry to the beautiful island of Hvar, which boasts over 2,700 hours of sunshine per year. This stunning island, located in the Adriatic Sea, is a perfect destination for those looking for a fun-filled island getaway without the crowds of Ibiza, Tenerife, and Santorini.
Hvar is great for holidays year-round, although, like any holiday destination, it will be slightly busier during the peak summer holidays. Travel experts at LonelyPlanet, recommend visiting during the spring or autumn, adding that these months are particularly beautiful in the Dalmatian region. They added: “You can expect plenty of sunny weather, the water is still warm enough for swimming, the island is less busy, and prices are lower.”
There is plenty for holidaymakers to do while staying on Hvar, from taking in a dip in the sea at the pebbly Hvar Beach, to visiting the 15th-century Tvrdalj Castle, or Fort Napoljun (Napoleon), which dates from Napoleonic era when Hvar was under French rule.
Visitors to Hvar have left rave reviews on TripAdvisor, with one writing: “Walk around the island on foot and you will be amazed by the beautiful landscapes and views of Hvar. We were delighted with the beautiful walk, the walk is long, but very well worth it.”
Another, who made the hike to the fort, added: “Worth the twenty minute hike up and back to see the amazing views! The fort’s history is pretty cool and worth a stop off. There is an amazing cactus garden on the path too.”
Hvar is also a great base for island hopping around the nearby Pakleni Islands. The largest of these, Sveti Klemen, is home to just three villages. However, it’s Marinkovac that is the most popular of these islands, thanks to its turquoise waters and beach clubs.
Also famous for its party scene is Stipanska Island, home of the world-famous Carpe Diem Beach, which turns into a beach club once the sun goes down.
