The beautiful town overshadowed by famous neighbour without the crowds

A beautiful town in Switzerland has been named among Europe’s best-kept secrets, overshadowed by its more famous neighbour.

Thun is a small town on the River Aare in Switzerland, just 19 miles from the capital Bern with a population of around 45,000 people.

It was included in European Best Destination’s list of Europe’s best hidden gems, towns off the beaten path.

The town lies on Lake Thun and is in the shadow of the Bernese Alps. It is Switzerland’s 11th-largest town.

European Best Destinations said Thun is popular with those living in Bernt, who go for relaxing weekends in the cosmopolitan spot.

Thun is historic, with cobbled streets that lead to a 12th-century castle overlooking the old town and mountain-lined lake.

There are lots of small shops to explore and restaurants to enjoy, as well as museums and galleries.

It is also popular with nature lovers, surrounded by trails for walking and mountain biking as well as the water sports offered by the lake.

There are a number of places to stay in the town, including hotels, Airbnbs, holiday lets and more.

Thun can be visited by flying to Bern from London. Bern is a 30-minute car journey and a 20-minute train from Thun.

Other towns included on the list of Europe’s best hidden gems are Batumi in Georgia, Torrevieja in Spain, Rio Marina in Italy and Veli Losinj in Croatia.
